One Day in Budapest with a Private Guide and Driver

A lot of my guests arrive in Budapest on a river cruise, between two other cities, or for a short weekend. They have one day, and they want to see as much as they can without running from one metro station to the next.

For them, I plan a day with a driver. We travel in a comfortable car, the driver waits for us at every stop, and I tell you the stories while we go. You see both Buda and Pest, you get out wherever the view is best, and nobody has to climb Castle Hill in the heat.

Here is how that day usually looks.

Why a Guide and a Driver Works So Well for One Day

Budapest is big, and it is split by the Danube. The best views are on the hills in Buda, and many of the big sights are spread out along the river and the avenues in Pest. On foot or by public transport you lose a lot of time just getting from place to place.

With a driver, that time is gone. We stop right next to the sights, we never look for parking, and you can leave your bags, jackets and shopping in the car. If it rains, you are dry in a few seconds. If you are tired, you sit down. It is also the easiest way to see the city with children, with older parents, or with anyone who can't walk far.

Morning: Pest, the Grand Avenue and Heroes' Square

We pick you up at your hotel or at the cruise dock at around 9 am.

We start with a drive along Andrássy út, our most elegant avenue and a UNESCO World Heritage site. On the way we pass the Opera House and the old villas near the top. At the end of the avenue is Heroes' Square, with the Millennium Monument and the statues of the chieftains who brought the Hungarians here more than a thousand years ago. We get out here, take photos, and I tell you who is who.

Right behind the square is City Park, with Vajdahunyad Castle and the big yellow Széchenyi Baths. We take a short walk around, so you can see the bath building and the lake.

Late Morning: St. Stephen's Basilica and the Parliament

Next we drive back towards the centre to St. Stephen's Basilica, the biggest church in Budapest. Inside you can see the mummified right hand of our first king, Saint Stephen. If you like, you can go up to the dome for a view over the rooftops of Pest.

Then we go to the Parliament. It is the building you have seen in every photo of Budapest, and it looks even bigger in person. We walk around it on Kossuth Square, and then a few minutes along the river to the Shoes on the Danube Bank, the small memorial to the Jewish people who were shot here in 1944 and 1945. I always stop here with my guests. It is a quiet place, and I think everyone should see it.

If you want to see the inside of the Parliament, we book the guided tour ahead of time and plan the day around it.

Lunch: A Proper Hungarian Meal

By now you will be hungry, and this is one of my favourite parts of the day. We sit down for a long lunch in a real Hungarian restaurant, not a tourist place with a menu in eight languages.

This is where you try the things you have read about: a bowl of goulash soup, chicken paprikás with nokedli, or stuffed cabbage. For dessert, maybe somlói galuska or a slice of Dobos cake. I help you with the menu, and I explain what each dish is and where it comes from. If you like wine, I can suggest a Hungarian glass to go with it.

I choose the restaurant based on what you like and where we are on the day. Just tell me if you have any allergies or don't eat meat, and I will pick a place that fits.

Afternoon: Buda Castle and Fisherman's Bastion

After lunch we cross the Danube to Buda, and you get a great look at the Chain Bridge on the way. The driver takes us up to Castle Hill, so there is no climb.

We walk through the Castle District, with its small medieval streets and colourful houses. We visit Matthias Church, with its painted tiles on the roof, and Fisherman's Bastion right next to it. From the Bastion you get the view across the Danube to the Parliament that everybody comes to Budapest for.

Then we walk over to the Royal Palace. Here you see the Danube from above, the bridges and the whole of Pest spread out in front of you.

Late Afternoon: Gellért Hill and the Citadella

Our last big stop is Gellért Hill. On foot it is a steep climb, but by car we go almost all the way to the top. Up at the Citadella you stand next to the Liberty Statue and see the whole city at once: Buda behind you, the river below and Pest in front of you. For me this is the best view in Budapest, and it is a good place to end the tour.

On the way back we can stop at the Great Market Hall if you want to buy paprika, salami or a bottle of pálinka to take home.

We drop you back at your hotel or your ship in the late afternoon.

In the Evening

If you still have energy, take a night cruise on the Danube. The Parliament, the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle are lit up at night, and it is a lovely way to see again from the water everything you saw during the day. Or go to a thermal bath for an hour or two, or have dinner and a drink in the Jewish Quarter. I am happy to give you a few tips before we say goodbye.

Your Day, Your Way

This is the plan I use most often, but every group is different. Some guests want more history, some want more food, some want to spend an hour in the Jewish Quarter or see the inside of the Parliament. Because it is a private tour, we can change the order, add a stop or skip one. You tell me what matters to you, and I plan the day around it.

The tour is just for you and your group. You can see all my tours on the Tours page.

FAQ

Is one day enough to see Budapest? One day is enough to see the main sights on both sides of the river, if you plan it well. With a guide and a driver you don't waste time on transport, so you see far more than you would on your own.

How long is the one day tour with a driver? Most of my full day tours take about seven to eight hours, including a long lunch. We can make it shorter or longer.

Can you pick us up from our hotel or river cruise ship? Yes. I pick you up wherever you are staying in Budapest, or at the cruise dock, and bring you back at the end of the day.

Is the tour good for people who can't walk much? Yes. This is one of the main reasons people choose a tour with a driver. The car stops right at each sight, and you only walk as much as you want to.

Are entry tickets and lunch included? No. Entry tickets, lunch and drinks are paid by guests on the spot. I help you buy tickets and choose the restaurant.

Can we see the inside of the Parliament on the tour? Yes. The Parliament tours are booked with a set time, so tell me early and I will plan the day around it.

What if it rains? Then the car is even better. We spend more time inside, in the Basilica, Matthias Church or the Great Market Hall, and you stay dry between stops.
