The last time I walked up to the Citadella with my husband, I was surprised again. I have lived in Budapest for years, and the view still stops me. The Danube turns gold, the bridges light up one by one, and the whole city is right there below you.
If you only have one evening in Budapest, this is a very good way to spend it.
Why the Citadella is perfect for sunset
The Citadella sits on top of Gellért Hill, right above the Danube. From the walls you can see Elisabeth Bridge, Liberty Bridge, the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle and the Parliament on the other side of the river.
Here is the nice part. The sun goes down behind you, over the Buda hills, so the light falls on Pest in front of you. First everything turns gold, and then the city lights come on. You get two views in one evening.
It's free to walk around
You don't pay anything to walk around the top. The paths, the terraces and the viewpoints are all free.
The Citadella was under renovation for a long time, and now there is a paid exhibition inside. It is interesting, but you don't need it for the sunset.

Come a little early so you have time to look around.
The Liberty Statue
You can see her from almost anywhere in the city, a woman holding a palm leaf high above her head. She has stood here since 1947. Walk right up to the base and you will see how big she really is. It is a good place for photos.
The White Stairs at the Statue
These wide white stairs at the foot of the statue are my favourite spot on the hill. Sit down, watch the light change and look at the people around you while you wait for the sun to go down. They are also great for photos with the city behind you.
The Little Rooftop Bar
There is a small bar up here, and it is very popular at sunset. On a busy summer evening you probably won't get a table, so plan to watch from the walls instead.
The Hungarian Flag
A big Hungarian flag flies over the Citadella. The red, white and green look lovely against a golden sky.
The Bastion of Liberty Exhibition
The exhibition inside tells the story of the hill and the fortress, from the Habsburg times until today. It is a good choice on a rainy day, and it helps you understand what you are looking at from the walls.
It is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00, and on Fridays from 12:00 to 20:00. In winter the sun sets around 4 pm, so watch the sunset first and then go inside. In summer, visit the exhibition in the afternoon and stay for the sunset.
Expect Crowds, and How to Handle Them
I won't pretend it is quiet. At sunset, especially in summer and at weekends, it gets busy. A few things help:
Arrive early. Come 45 to 60 minutes before sunset to get a good spot on the wall.
Go on a weekday if you can.
Visit in spring or autumn. The light is just as nice and there are fewer people.
Walk a bit further. There are quieter viewpoints along the paths around the hill.
How to Get to the Citadella
On foot, my favourite way: start at Szent Gellért tér, next to the Gellért Hotel. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes uphill at an easy pace. Wear comfortable shoes.
Bus 27: take it from Móricz Zsigmond körtér (on the M4 metro) to the Búsuló Juhász (Citadella) stop. From there it is a short, flat walk to the top. A normal BKK ticket is fine.
Tram 19, 41, 47 or 49: get off at Szent Gellért tér, where the walk starts. The M4 metro stops there too.
Taxi, Bolt or Uber: about 10 minutes from the centre to near the top, then a short walk.
When to Go
Sunset is around 4 pm in December and close to 8:45 pm at the end of June, so check the time for your date. In December, come down after sunset and warm up at the Christmas markets in the city centre.
Bring a light jacket, because it is windy up there even on warm days. Bring a small bottle of water too. Drinks and snacks at the top are not cheap.
Walking Down After Dark
If you walk, try to start down before it gets fully dark, or use the torch on your phone. Stay on the main paths and walk with other people. Most visitors leave at about the same time, so you won't be alone.
