Private Danube Bend Day Trip from Budapest: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom with a Local Guide

By Kata | katabudapest.com | Published Oct 26, 2026

If you have one free day in Budapest, my honest advice is to spend it in the Danube Bend. Just north of the city, the river makes a dramatic turn between the hills, and along that curve you find three of Hungary’s most beautiful towns: Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom. I have been taking guests there for more than 10 years, and it is still one of my favourite days of the week. Here is exactly how a private Danube Bend day trip with me works.

What is a private Danube Bend day trip?

It is a full day out of Budapest just for you and your group. No strangers, no big bus, no waiting for 40 other people. I am a licensed Budapest guide, born and raised here. I pick you up at your hotel or apartment in a comfortable vehicle, guide you at every stop and bring you back to your door in the evening.

You decide the pace. If you fall in love with Szentendre’s little streets, we stay longer. If you would rather skip a museum and have a long lunch with a view, we do that. Entrance tickets, lunch and activities are paid on the spot, so the day is truly personalised: you only pay for the things you actually want to do.

Let's do it! →

Stop 1: Esztergom, Hungary’s first royal capital

We start with the furthest town, so the longest drive is done in the morning while everyone is fresh. Esztergom is where Hungarian history began. It was the first royal seat of Hungary, and King Saint Stephen, our first king, is connected to this town. Today it is home to the Esztergom Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, standing on a hill above the Danube.

If you are up for it, you can climb to the dome for one of the best views in the country. And here is one of my favourite little secrets: just below the dome there is a tiny café that most visitors walk right past. Sitting there with a coffee, looking out over the Danube and the hills, is one of those moments my guests always remember.

Down in the old town, we can stroll around Széchenyi Square, Esztergom’s elegant baroque main square, with its pastel coloured houses and the old Town Hall. It is quiet, beautiful and far less crowded than the squares in Budapest.

From the Basilica you can see the Mária Valéria Bridge, and on the other side of the river is Slovakia. If you like, we can walk across the bridge to Štúrovo, or Párkány as Hungarians still call it. It belonged to Hungary until 1920, when the borders were redrawn after the First World War, so it is still full of Hungarian speakers. A short walk, and you can say you have been to two countries in one day!

Stop 2: Visegrád, castles and the best view of the river

From Esztergom we drive along the river to Visegrád. It was a royal seat from 1325, and King Matthias built a Renaissance summer palace here. If you would like to, we can visit the castle on the hill. It means climbing some stairs, but the reward is the most famous panorama of the whole region: the Danube curving between green hills. On a clear day, it takes people’s breath away.

Visegrád’s history goes back much further than the kings, too. The Danube was once the border of the Roman Empire, and here you can still see the ruins of an old Roman fort that guarded the river almost 2,000 years ago.

And if you are in the mood for some fun, we can try the bobsled run on the hillside, weather permitting. You race down through the forest on your own little sled, and I promise, grown ups laugh just as loudly as the kids!

We usually arrive in Visegrád around 12 or 1 o’clock, so this is our lunch stop. I pick a restaurant with views over the Danube Bend, so you can enjoy a proper Hungarian lunch with the river right in front of you.

And here is a hidden gem that overseas visitors almost never know about: if you let me know in advance, we can add a 1.5 to 2 hour wellness and spa break to the day. Imagine relaxing in warm water surrounded by forest, looking out over the Danube Bend. After a morning of sightseeing, it is the perfect way to slow down before we continue to Szentendre.

Stop 3: Szentendre, the artists’ town

We finish the day in Szentendre, only about 40 minutes from Budapest, so the drive home is short. Szentendre was settled by Serbian refugees during the Ottoman era, and they left behind colourful houses and six Serbian Orthodox churches in the town centre. Today it is a town of artists, with many galleries and museums, and it is the perfect place to wander without a plan.

This is the most “choose your own adventure” part of the day. Here are some of the things we can do together:

  • Stroll around the main square with its Plague Cross from 1763 and the Blagovestenska Church with its red tower

  • Visit the Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum, full of her wonderful, joyful ceramic figures

  • See the Marzipan Museum, where everything, even famous buildings, is made of marzipan

  • Pop into the Christmas Museum, which feels festive in every season

  • Browse the art galleries, a lovely little bookstore and a beautiful porcelain store

  • Walk along the river promenade, right beside the Danube

And of course, there is food. You can grab a hot lángos, try a scoop of lavender ice cream, or sit down for a proper meal in a good local restaurant. As with the rest of the day, you only pay for what you choose, so it is completely up to you how much or how little we do.

After Szentendre, we drive you back to your door in Budapest, usually tired, happy and with a bag full of marzipan.

The whole day usually lasts 8 to 10 hours, depending on what you would like to add, like the spa break, the bobsled or a long lunch. We travel in a comfortable vehicle with door-to-door pickup and drop-off at your Budapest accommodation, so you never have to deal with trains, boats or parking.

Why choose a private Danube Bend tour instead of a group tour?

It is only your group, whether you are 2 people or a family of 8. Pickup and drop-off are at your door, in a comfortable vehicle. You choose the stops, the pace and the lunch spot. You only pay entrance fees for the places you actually want to visit. It works well for children, older travellers and anyone who prefers not to rush. You get a real local, not a recording: stories, history and plenty of honest tips. Prices are per group, not per person, so a private day trip is often better value than people expect, especially for families and friends travelling together.

Frequently asked questions about a private Danube Bend day trip

How long is a private Danube Bend day trip from Budapest? The whole day usually lasts 8 to 10 hours, including door-to-door transport. The exact length depends on what you want to add, such as a spa break, the bobsled or a longer lunch.

Can I visit Esztergom, Visegrád and Szentendre in one day? Yes. That is exactly what this private day trip is designed for. We start in Esztergom, have lunch in Visegrád and finish in Szentendre, close to Budapest, travelling in a comfortable vehicle the whole way.

How much does a private Danube Bend day trip cost? Prices are per group, not per person, and depend on your group size and date. Send me your date and number of guests and I will send you a personal quote.

What is included in the price? The price includes your private guided day with me and door-to-door transport from your Budapest accommodation and back. Entrance fees, lunch and activities, like the Basilica dome, Visegrád castle, the bobsled or the spa, are paid by you on the spot. This keeps the day very personal: you only pay for what you choose to do.

Can I visit Slovakia on the Danube Bend day trip? Yes, if you would like to. In Esztergom we can walk across the Mária Valéria Bridge to Štúrovo in Slovakia, a town that was part of Hungary until 1920. Please bring your passport or ID card, just in case.

Can I add a spa break to the day? Yes. If you tell me in advance, we can add a 1.5 to 2 hour wellness and spa break in Visegrád, with views of the forest and the Danube Bend. It is a hidden gem most international visitors do not know about. Spa entry is paid separately.

Is the Danube Bend day trip good for families with children? Very much so. Kids love the bobsled in Visegrád, the castle on the hill and the Marzipan Museum in Szentendre, and because the tour is private, we can take breaks whenever the little ones need them.

When is the best time to do a Danube Bend day trip? You can do it all year round. Spring, summer and early autumn are perfect for the views, the river promenade and the bobsled. Late autumn colours are beautiful, and in winter the towns are quiet and cosy, with fewer visitors.
