Famous Hungarians You Didn't Know Were Hungarian — A Local's Guide
I play a game with my guests on almost every tour.
Somewhere between the Chain Bridge and the Parliament, I start listing famous Hungarians. Not the ones everyone knows — Liszt, Bartók, the usual names on plaques and statues. The other ones. The ones that make people stop walking and say: wait, really?
Harry Houdini. Hungarian.The Rubik's Cube. Hungarian.The man who invented the ballpoint pen. Hungarian.The father of the hydrogen bomb. Hungarian.The founder of the Pulitzer Prize. Hungarian.
By the time I finish the list, my guests are looking at Budapest differently. This is a small country of ten million people that has quietly shaped the modern world in ways that almost nobody talks about.
This post is that list — written down, with the stories behind the names.
Why Hungary Produces So Many Extraordinary People
Before the names, a little context.
Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe with a population of around ten million people and a language that shares almost nothing with any of its neighbours. It has spent much of its history under foreign rule — Ottoman, Habsburg, Soviet — and has survived each period by developing something that outside pressure tends to produce in abundance: ingenuity, adaptability, and a fierce determination to be excellent at something.
The Hungarian education system, particularly in mathematics and the sciences, has been extraordinary for over a century. The gymnázium — the Hungarian secondary school — produced generations of students who were trained to think rigorously, creatively, and across disciplines in a way that the rest of the world is only now beginning to understand as genuinely exceptional.
Add to this the particular circumstance of the twentieth century — two world wars, the Holocaust, Soviet occupation — which sent waves of extraordinarily talented Hungarians out into the world, carrying their education and their ingenuity with them. Many of them changed the world they arrived in.
Here are the ones whose stories deserve to be told.
The Escapologist — Harry Houdini
Born Erich Weisz in Budapest in 1874, the man the world knows as Harry Houdini was the son of a rabbi from Pest. His family emigrated to the United States when he was a child, and he went on to become the most famous escape artist and illusionist in history — a man who built an entire career around the impossibility of containing him.
The Hungarian connection is not incidental. Houdini spoke Hungarian throughout his life, maintained ties to his birthplace, and the particular combination of showmanship, physical discipline, and psychological intelligence that made him extraordinary was shaped by a childhood in a Jewish Budapest household at the end of the nineteenth century — a world of intelligence, ambition, and the constant awareness that survival required skill.
He died in 1926 on Halloween, which felt appropriate. He was 52. Budapest has a plaque commemorating his birth. Most people walk past it without knowing what they are looking at.
The Puzzle Maker — Ernő Rubik
The Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian architect and professor of design at the Budapest College of Applied Arts. He built the first prototype in his mother's apartment in Budapest, using wooden blocks and rubber bands, to help his students understand three-dimensional geometry.
He did not initially realise he had invented a puzzle. He realised he had created a teaching tool. The fact that it was also an extraordinarily satisfying object to hold and manipulate — and one of the most fiendishly difficult puzzles ever devised — became apparent later.
The Rubik's Cube was licensed internationally in 1980 and became the best-selling toy in history. An estimated 350 million have been sold. Ernő Rubik is still alive, still based in Budapest, still working, and still genuinely surprised by what his teaching tool became.
There is a Rubik's Museum in Budapest. It is exactly as satisfying as you would expect.
The Journalist Who Created Modern Philanthropy — Joseph Pulitzer
József Pulitzer was born in Makó, Hungary in 1847 and emigrated to the United States at seventeen to fight in the American Civil War. He went on to become one of the most influential newspaper publishers in American history — owner of the New York World, pioneer of investigative journalism, and the man whose endowment created the Pulitzer Prize, awarded annually since 1917 for excellence in journalism, literature, and musical composition.
Pulitzer believed passionately that journalism existed to serve ordinary people rather than the powerful — a belief shaped, at least in part, by his experience of growing up in a country where the press was controlled and the powerful were rarely held accountable. His Hungarian origins gave him a particular relationship with power and a particular conviction about what journalism was for.
Every Pulitzer Prize ever awarded traces back to a Hungarian boy who left Makó at seventeen and decided, somewhere along the way, to change how Americans read the news.
The Father of the Hydrogen Bomb — Edward Teller
Ede Teller was born in Budapest in 1908, educated in Hungary and Germany, and fled Europe in the 1930s as the political situation made remaining impossible. He arrived in the United States, joined the Manhattan Project, and went on to become the primary figure behind the development of the hydrogen bomb — the thermonuclear weapon that defined the nuclear age and changed the strategic logic of the entire Cold War.
Teller is a complicated figure — celebrated by some as a defender of American security, criticised by others for his role in the destruction of J. Robert Oppenheimer's career and his support for weapons development over arms control. He was brilliant, difficult, politically conservative, and one of the most consequential scientists of the twentieth century.
He was also Hungarian. He spoke with an accent his entire life. He died in Stanford in 2003 at the age of 95, having outlived the Cold War he helped shape.
The Man Who Invented the Ballpoint Pen — László Bíró
In 1938, a Hungarian journalist named László Bíró noticed that the ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly and didn't smear — unlike the fountain pen ink he used every day. He spent years developing a pen that used the same type of ink, with a tiny rotating ball at the tip to control the flow.
The result was the ballpoint pen — one of the most ubiquitous objects in human history, used by an estimated one billion people every day worldwide.
Bíró fled to Argentina during the Second World War, patented his invention there, and licensed it internationally. In Argentina, ballpoint pens are still called birome in his honour. In the United Kingdom, they are called biros. In the rest of the world they are simply pens — so thoroughly absorbed into daily life that nobody thinks about where they came from.
They came from Budapest.
The Father of the Computer — John von Neumann
János von Neumann was born in Budapest in 1903 into a wealthy Jewish banking family, educated at the finest schools in Hungary, and recognised as a mathematical prodigy almost before he could read. He went on to become one of the most important mathematicians and scientists of the twentieth century — a figure whose contributions span game theory, quantum mechanics, economics, and, most consequentially, computer science.
The von Neumann architecture — the design framework in which a computer stores both its data and its instructions in the same memory — is the basis of virtually every computer ever built. The device you are reading this on, whatever form it takes, runs on a principle developed by a Hungarian mathematician from Budapest.
Von Neumann was also central to the Manhattan Project, contributed to the development of the hydrogen bomb alongside Teller, and developed the mathematical foundations of game theory that transformed economics, political science, and strategic thinking. He died in 1957 at 53, widely considered the most intelligent person many of his colleagues had ever met — and his colleagues included Albert Einstein and Richard Feynman.
The Father of Modern Zionism — Theodor Herzl
Tivadar Herzl was born in Budapest in 1860, grew up speaking Hungarian and German, and went on to become the founder of modern political Zionism — the movement that ultimately led to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, one year after his death.
Herzl trained as a lawyer, worked as a journalist, and was radicalised by the Dreyfus Affair in France — the trial of a French Jewish army officer falsely convicted of treason, which showed Herzl that assimilation was not a reliable protection against antisemitism in Europe. His response was to write Der Judenstaat — The Jewish State — in 1896, laying out the case for a Jewish homeland.
He spent the rest of his short life — he died at 44 — travelling, organising, persuading, and building the political and institutional foundations of a movement that would reshape the Middle East.
He was born on Dohány Street in Budapest, steps from the Great Synagogue. There is a plaque. There is also a statue. And the Great Synagogue itself — the largest in Europe — is a short walk from his birthplace, in the heart of the Jewish quarter that shaped him.
The Photographer Who Changed How the World Sees War — Robert Capa
Endre Friedmann was born in Budapest in 1913, left Hungary as a young man, reinvented himself in Paris as Robert Capa, and became the most famous war photographer of the twentieth century.
His photograph of a Spanish Republican soldier at the moment of death — The Falling Soldier, taken in 1936 — is one of the most reproduced and debated photographs in history. His images from the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach — taken while running through the surf under fire — are some of the most important documents of the Second World War.
Capa co-founded Magnum Photos, the legendary photography cooperative, in 1947. He was killed by a landmine in Vietnam in 1954 while on assignment for Life magazine. He was 40 years old.
He was born in Budapest, on a street in the VII district, in the same Jewish quarter that produced Herzl and so many others. The city has a way of producing people who go out into the world and show it something it wasn't expecting.
The Composer Who Invented a New Music — Béla Bartók
Béla Bartók was born in 1881 in what is now Romania — then part of the Kingdom of Hungary — and grew up to become one of the most important composers of the twentieth century. But his significance goes beyond the concert hall.
Bartók was one of the founders of ethnomusicology — the systematic study of folk music as a serious academic discipline. He spent decades travelling through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and North Africa, recording folk music on early phonograph equipment, transcribing it by hand, and using it as the foundation for a compositional language that was entirely new.
His music is demanding, precise, and deeply rooted in the rhythms and scales of Central European folk tradition. It sounds like nothing else. It sounds, unmistakably, like where it came from.
The Béla Bartók Memorial House in the Buda Hills — his actual home, preserved exactly as he left it — is one of the most quietly moving museums in Budapest and one of the least visited. It deserves better.
The Vitamin C Pioneer — Albert Szent-Györgyi
Albert Szent-Györgyi was born in Budapest in 1893, trained as a physician, and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1937 for his discovery of Vitamin C — or more precisely, for isolating ascorbic acid and identifying its role in preventing scurvy.
The discovery was made partly in Hungary, using Hungarian paprika as his primary source material — Hungarian red peppers, he found, contained extraordinarily high concentrations of Vitamin C, far higher than citrus fruit. The fact that the discovery of one of the most important nutrients in human biology is connected to Hungarian paprika is the kind of detail that could only be true.
Szent-Györgyi later became a vocal critic of the Hungarian government and eventually emigrated to the United States, where he continued research into cancer biology until his death in 1986 at the age of 93. His work on Vitamin C alone would have been enough. He kept going for another fifty years after winning the Nobel Prize.
The Inventor of Holography — Dennis Gabor
Dénes Gábor was born in Budapest in 1900, fled Europe in 1933 as the political situation deteriorated, and went on to invent holography — the technique that produces three-dimensional images using laser light — for which he received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971.
Holography is now used in security features on banknotes and credit cards, in medical imaging, in data storage research, and in the laser light shows that play above every major concert stage in the world. Every time you tilt a credit card and watch a three-dimensional image shift in the light, you are looking at the work of a Hungarian physicist from Budapest.
Gabor died in London in 1979. He is not as famous as he should be, which is perhaps appropriate — holography, too, is everywhere without anyone quite noticing where it came from.
The Martians of Budapest
There is a story — probably apocryphal, certainly Hungarian — that when the first generation of brilliant Hungarian scientists arrived at Los Alamos to work on the Manhattan Project, their American colleagues were so astonished by their intelligence and their apparent otherness that they concluded, as a joke, that these Hungarians must not be human at all.
They called them The Martians.
The Martians included von Neumann, Teller, Leó Szilárd (who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction), Eugene Wigner (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1963), and Theodore von Kármán (founder of modern aerodynamics). All Hungarian. All educated in Budapest. All shaped by the same gymnázium tradition, the same mathematical rigour, the same particular culture of intellectual excellence that Hungary produced in the early twentieth century and has never quite been able to explain.
The joke about Martians has become, among physicists and historians of science, something close to a serious question. What was it about Budapest, at that particular moment, that produced so many extraordinary minds?
Nobody has a complete answer. The education system. The culture. The particular pressure of being a small nation with a unique language, surrounded by larger powers, that developed excellence as a form of survival. The extraordinary density of talent in a small city at a particular historical moment.
Whatever the reason, the results are sitting in your pocket right now — in the computer architecture, the ballpoint pen, the holographic strip on your credit card, and the Rubik's Cube that is probably somewhere in a drawer at home.
